"Off" is rarely off. Televisions, consoles, set-top boxes, chargers, printers and anything with a clock or a standby light keep drawing power around the clock. Individually it is only a watt or two; across a whole home it can add up to 5–10% of your electricity bill — money spent on devices you thought were switched off. Step 1: find the worst offenders

Not all standby is equal. Step 2: group and switch

The fastest win is a switchable power strip. Do the same for the home-office cluster: monitor, printer, speakers and dock. You keep the convenience of leaving things plugged in while cutting the idle cost.

Step 3: change the settings that matter

Some devices let you cut standby without touching a switch. Turn a games console's "instant-on" or "rest" mode to a full power-down — it removes most of its idle draw at the cost of a slightly slower start. Enable eco or deep-sleep modes on TVs and computers.
